Keith Terry Body Music
Oriveden Opisto 1.-2.6.2008

Body Music, also known as Body Percussion and Body Drumming, is the oldest
music on the planet. Before people were hollowing logs and slapping rocks,
they were using their bodies to stomp, clap, sing, snap and grunt their
musical ideas. Keith Terry has developed a contemporary style of
Body Music based on his training as a jazz drummer, as well as his years
of
intensive study and collaboration with world rhythmic systems.
Using the oldest instrument on the planet -- the human body -- we clap,
slap, snap, step and vocalize our way through some very fun and funky,
original and traditional rhythmic music. BODY MUSIC is an effective way
of
internalizing rhythmic work, which enhances the development of time, timing,
phrasing, listening skills, independence, coordination and ensemble
awareness. It is a useful tool for musicians, dancers and movers of all
kinds, actors, DJs and film editors -- anyone interested in improving
their
rhythmic skills. Wear comfortable clothing and clean sneakers or jazz
shoes. No previous experience necessary.

GENERAL
JaSeSoi ry, Orff-Schulwerk Association of Finland was founded in 1993
to continue the work and heritage of MUSISOI ry, the first Finnish Orff-Schulwerk
Association (founded 1985). JaSeSoi ry gathers together music educators
from all teaching levels. One of JaSeSoi ry’s cornerstones is to
apply the Orff philosophy and Carl Orff’s pedagogical ideas to Finnish
music education. JaSeSoi ry is a registered association. JaSeSoi ry controls
the quality of Orff-based courses in Finland.
Membership
In the year 2007 JaSeSoi ry had an unparalled amount of 187 members. JaSeSoi
ry has two annual meetings, one during the Rhythm Seminar in March and
one in the autumn. During the autumn meeting there is also a free educational
afternoon for the members.
Board
The Board is elected annually by the general assembly. The Board consists
of the President and 3-6 members. Each Board Member has a personal Vice
Member. The Board meetings are open to Board Members and Vice Members.
Instrumentarium
JaSeSoi ry has a set of Studio 49 -instruments available for its courses.
The instrumentarium was donated to JaSeSoi ry by the Carl Orff Foundation
and the company Studio 49. On the year 2008 the JaSeSoi Orff-instrumentarium
will be completed.
Local chapters
Local chapters are volunteer groups of their geographical area. Some chapters
are legally registered, some work unorganised. The unifying thing is to
share ideas and experiences with other music educators.
Financing
All JaSeSoi ry activities are based on voluntary work. No office is available
and the work is done in home offices. JaSeSoi ry’s annual membership
fee is relatively low, only 30 Euros a year. Funding the activities by
ourselves has set limits to the level and amount of affordable projects.
ANNUAL EVENTS
Rhythm Seminar
Rhythm Seminar is an annual weekend course in March and has long traditions.
The tradition began in 1986 when MUSISOI ry introduced this kind of teaching
format in Finland. JaSeSoi ry celebrated its 20th Rhythm Seminar on the
year 2006.
Level Course
was introduced to the Finnish music education system in the year 1995.
The system resembles the American one, but is totally applied to the Finnish
society. The three-level course means one-week intensive summer course
each year. Furthermore after finishing the three levels there is an extension
called “Diploma Seminar”. Although the Level Courses have
been run since 1995 it was in 2003, when the first approved printed curriculum
was published. The Level Courses have brought leading instructors from
abroad and Finland to enrich the contents of the Finnish Orff education.
According to us it is essential to learn what is happening elsewhere,
but also to learn to apply the ideas to one’s own work.
International World Village
is the newest format in JaSeSoi ry’s educational palette. World
Village 2007 was the ninth in the row. The idea of the World Village is
to unite music educators of different countries and cultures. The course
location is in the middle of the Finnish countryside. Music and the human
spirit are the elements of this efficient week. To quote one of the participants:
”The friendship of all the participants, the support, encouragement,
sharing and caring has been exhilarating. A link to the World Village
Photo Gallery is : http://www.picturetrail.com/worldvillage reports were
published in many music educational magazines around the world.
PUBLICATIONS AND NEWSLETTERS
During the last 12 years JaSeSoi ry has noticed the need of printed information
of Orff-Schulwerk and other essentials in Finnish language. In the year
2002 we revitalized the concept “JaSeSoi Journal”, which is
published twice a year. It is free for our members.
HANDBOOK LIBRARY
JaSeSoi ry controls and administrates quite a large collection of music
educational and Orff-Schulwerk related material. This far the number of
the volumes is around 400. The collection contains the original volumes
and international editions of Musik für Kinder as well as documentaries,
magazines and journals. The main idea is to keep the collection as a whole,
and not to donate it to any public organization or institution. The reason
for that is that administrators of the organizations change, and we are
unable to predict the decisions of the future. The library is located
in Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, where it is possible to keep the whole
collection available for the researchers.
INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES
JaSeSoi ry has always been an international organization with senses open
to any international exchange. Each of our courses has had at least one
teacher from abroad! The exchange also works vice versa, as many Finnish
JaSeSoi educators have got invitations to run workshops abroad. In 1996
JaSeSoi ry organized the first Baltic and Scandinavian Meeting of Educators,
and in 2000 the International Orff-Schulwerk Symposium “Expression
in Music and Dance Education”. JaSeSoi ry has been in contact with
Orff Societies and institutions in other countries.
